Looking Beyond: A Photography Competition and Exhibition

The ‘Looking Beyond’ Photography Competition is designed to increase people’s awareness of dementia, challenge misconceptions and highlight our hopes for all those affected by the condition.

To kick start Dementia Awareness Week the organisers are seeking photographs from which they can select the best pictures to form part of a travelling exhibition. Winners will have their images displayed over a six to nine month period from September 2017 at exhibition venues throughout East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull. There are no prizes but your work will be widely seen in Hull and East Riding area.

The photography competition is the idea of Emma. Emma’s Dad was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 66 and this opened her eyes to a condition that is stigmatised and misunderstood by many. Inspired by her father and the impact that a striking image can have on a passer-by, Emma had the idea for a travelling photo exhibition to raise awareness and hope for people affected by dementia.

To help break down the myths that surround dementia and to raise awareness, Emma, a trustee of a new local registered charity Dementia Friendly East Riding (DFER) has teamed up with local photographer Nigel Walker, members of the Viewfinder Photographic Society based in Skidby and Wendy Mitchell, a person who describes herself as ‘living positively with dementia’ to launch the ‘Looking Beyond’ photography competition. Wendy, who is one of the competition judges, says that “As memories disappear and words are difficult to find, images take on a new importance and have a special place in my life.”

The ‘Looking Beyond’ team are inviting members of the public to submit captivating images that can be displayed with a positive message of hope and support for people affected by dementia.

The best pictures and captions chosen by a panel of judges will form part of a travelling exhibition where winners will have their images displayed at venues throughout the East Riding and Hull.

There is no restriction in the genre. To see example images, Competition Rules and more, please visit the ‘Looking Beyond’ Facebook page or email lookingbeyond@viewfinderphoto.org.

All image submissions must be made by 12 noon on Saturday 12th August 2017.
